The GAANN Fellowships are for study in the applied physics research areas of biophysics, optical and laser physics, and infrared semiconductor physics. The program would establish five Fellowships for U.S. citizens or permanent residents, whose 3-year training period will be devoted to extensive physics research and educational training under the direct supervision of a GAANN faculty member of the department. The five GAANN faculty currently eligible to act as supervisors are W. A. Schroeder, C. K. Rhodes, S. Sivananthan, A. Ansari, and C. Grein. Fellowship Stipend: Successful candidates will receive a GAANN Fellowship of up to $30,000/year based on financial need. They will also receive a tuition and fee waiver. awards over 100 fellowships each year to graduate students in the
fields
of
science and engineering. Fellows may choose any accredited institution
of
higher education in the United States offering doctoral degrees in
science
or engineering. The tenure of the award is 36 months cumulatively,
beginning
in the fall of the year the fellowship is awarded. The evaluation of
candidates will be based on all available evidence of ability,
including
