Soft interfaces provide a model environment to study the interplay of dimensionality, fluctuations, and intermolecular interactions. Professor Schlossman"s group uses synchrotron x-ray scattering and other techniques to study these interfaces on length scales from sub-nanometer to macroscopic. His group pioneered the study of structure on the molecular length scale at liquid-liquid interfaces. This included studies of ordering and structure of nearly two-dimensional assemblies of molecules supported at the interface between two liquids. Application of an electric field at the interface has allowed his group to determine fundamental aspects of the ordering of ions that are important for many processes in chemistry and biology. His group is also studying interactions between proteins and lipids by forming monolayers of lipids, allowing proteins to bind to the lipids, then studying the lipid-protein interface with x-ray scattering.
