Research Area: Experimental Condensed Matter Professor Kodama’s research is on magnetic materials in the form of thin layers or assemblies of nanometer scale particles (“nanoparticles”). He is developing a technique for condensing nanoparticles from a metal vapor and spraying them on substrates along with a second material that binds the nanoparticles together. These “nanocomposite” materials are used to study magnetic relaxation effects by magnetometry, light scattering, and neutron scattering. He is also studying the electrical conductivity of such materials, which can be very sensitive to magnetic fields, due to an interaction between the spin of the conduction electrons and the magnetic moment of each nanoparticle. These nanocomposites can be engineered to have suitable magnetic properties for advanced storage media, magnetic sensors, or flux concentrators. Other interests include magnetic/semiconductor layered structures for magnetic-field-sensitive transistors, quantum dot structures for solid state lasers, and computational models of spin configurations in nanocomposites and layered structures | ||||||||||||||||
