Activities in 2010

QuarkNet at NASM SW

American Physical Society talk in Washington DC, Feb. 2010

Mario Camuyrano discussed a search for CHArged Massive Particles (CHAMP) using QuarkNet detectors at UIC

  • Spring Data Challenge

UIC QuarkNet held a 1-day Saturday workshop on March 27th in order to prepare for a CLASA Spring Data Challenge! Over a dozen sites throughout Chicago got their detectors working and are recording cosmic ray data continuously over a 2-month period. This Chicagoland data set forms the basis for searches of very large cosmic ray showers that hit counters at multiple school sites. QuarkNet UIC March 2010

    QuarkNet at NASM SW

UIC QuarkNet joined 4 high school groups at the Smithsonian Museum, operating their 4 QuarkNet detectors on May 5-6th in order to celebrate national lab day. We collected data at NASM as well as many sites throughout the country.

  • At NASM, we had a visit from our Illinois Congressman Bill Foster and the Bartlett High School group also visited his office. Data was collected to measure the rate of simultaneous muon hits are two arrays separated by 28m - 8 events per hour. Single muon rates were approximately 10 HZ and 2-muon rates from one array was around 1 Hz. Notie our group in front of the Apollo 11 command module. Yes, and under Charles Lindburg's "the Spirit of St. Louis".

    Future 2010 summer workshop

    July 12, 2010 - July 16, 2010

Teachers and students will assemble detectors and performed four experiments using cosmic ray counters: muon lifetime, muon speed and cosmic rate rates versus atmospheric pressure. All students will present their results in talks to the whole group to close the workshop.
